Hydro Energy - Hydro Turbines
| There are basically three types of hydro turbines: The Pelton,
Francis and Kaplan turbines. This separation was made according
to the operation area of each turbine which is displayed in the
diagram shown below: |
| |
 Types of Hydro Turbines
|
|
| The
basic characteristics of each turbine type are the following: |
| |
| The
PELTON turbine |
|
 PELTON
|
| • |
Robust
design; low investment
|
| • |
Low basic
area for the turbine housing with easy design, because of the
reasonable construction cost
|
| • |
Flat course
of efficiency; pelton turbine is especially suitable for variable
flow |
|
| |
|
| The
FRANCIS turbine |
 FRANCIS |
 FRANCIS |
| • |
Robust
design; small turbine-space
|
| • |
High revolutions
(engine speed) per minute; mostly direct coupling with the generator
|
| • |
Suitable
(aptitude) for strong variation of under-water level |
|
| |
|
| The
KAPLAN turbine |
|
 KAPLAN |
| • |
Suitable
for high flows.
|
| • |
Small sensitivity
against ice, detrial and washing - ashore broken rock - glays,
it is not necessary to use a rake for fine gravel - sand granulate |
